Friends of ANZAC Cottage

The Friends of ANZAC Cottage share the poignant story of ANZAC Cottage, a brick and tile cottage built in one day in 1916. The Cottage, with its dual purpose as a memorial to those who fought at Gallipoli and as a home for a returned wounded soldier from that conflict and his family, serves as a powerful symbol of sacrifice and resilience. The organisation offers commemorative events that allow communities to reflect and honour the veterans who have taken part in war and peacekeeping missions for Australia, both in the past and in the present. The Cottage was built by the community of Mount Hawthorn with donations of money, skills, and labour, as well as discounted building materials from local businesses and furniture. The story reflects the strength of community spirit and the supportive attitude of those "back home" toward the defence forces. The Friends also offer new findings and research on the war and the Cottage story, freely sharing this information with the community.
