Beloved First Nations Elder is at breaking point and will suffer extreme burnout without respite
Imagine being born into a culture and a family where it is expected that you will be the carer for your life. The elder I refer to remembers caring for other family members since they were 10 years old but there is no one that cares for her. This woman had a tumultuous journey to being a grandparent. Along the way she had 5 children and of which 2 took their own lives. She is desperate to keep the little family together she has left and is running herself into the ground caring for the remaining children as well as her grandchildren. The family live with neurodiverse conditions and heavily rely on her to meet all their needs, including being the only person able to drive in the family. She is beyond exhausted and has said she just “needs a break so she can rest to continue to supporting her family, her community and her kin”, just like she always has
