single mother from the PNG and is currently unable to receive an income whilst waiting for a Protection Visa

Single Mother was residing with the father of her daughter in PNG before her family helped her to escape and put her on a boat to Australia QLD. The client was heavily pregnant and transferred to Townsville hospital to give birth. The client was in an extremely violent relationship and her children's life were at imminent risk if she continued to remain in that relationship. Cairns is their home, however, over the past 5 years they have not had a home, couch surfing between the PNG community and limited family in FNQ – they cannot return to PNG as their life is at risk. She is not in receipt of Centrelink and relies on food vouchers by community organizations. The daughter is meant to start kindy soon, however without a right to an income this is not possible. At present the mum does not have work rights (per Department of Home Affairs) and is being temporarily funded to reside in a motel.
