The devastating floods in the Fitzroy Valley in January 2023 left the community in disarray, with far reaching impacts.

The devastating floods in the Fitzroy Valley in January 2023 left the community in disarray, impacting not only the physical landscape but also the emotional well-being of its residents. Recognizing the need for initiatives to restore a sense of normalcy and unity, the shire’s recovery team developed several strategies to support all community members, with a particular focus on the youth. The creation of a youth cooking program is an initiative that provides the young people of Fitzroy Valley with an opportunity to engage in a constructive and enjoyable activity.
During the school holidays, the cooking program sees an increase in participation, with numbers ranging from 120 to 170 kids. However, the capacity of our youth team is unable to run the program at its full potential, highlighting the need for a dedicated facilitator. After a lengthy search, we were unable to find anyone local to fill the role.
